Oh. mother!
It's all in the detail.
I've probably told you about Mum's Memory Infill Technique, whereby as
she forgets the past she pastes over the cracks with suitable detail.
Well my birth became premature today. From being 6 six days early (not
really prem) I am now a formally prem baby - 7 weeks prem (let's not do
things by halves!)
She also recreated her marriage to my Dad. It's always been an maginery
trip to Gretna Green in 1970 while me and my brothers were asleep with
Granny babysitting. NOW she had to get married because she was
expecting one of us.. that'd be 7 or 8 years earlier.
We expect the M.I.T. now but are always stunned at the smooth delivery. Seamlessly redrawing my past in her head.
What next?

On and On
Sunday is Mum Day. The old sock came to visit us again today.
This time it was very long monologue about a neighbour whose husband has walked out on her.
The delivery is in slow motion: few words separated with long gaps. Her
gaze is rivotted on us looking for a nod or a smile to keep her going.
It's boring and of no relevance to us. We don't know the woman and
despite the greatest of efforts we have no interest in her well being.
We smile. We listen. We nod. But it's so dull.
She has friends. Lots at church and neighbours. She doesn't have to torture us like this.
We try to interject with snippets about our lives: holiday next week;
baby due in September; work;school. But she's just not interested. She
always relates it to her life and goes off on a long speech about
herself.
We can take it for 2 hours a week. Just.

Reprieve
The dear old sock rang today to tell us that she can't visit tomorrow (as is usual) because of illness.
We don't believe her.
She has another family who sponge off her and call her "nana". She's probably going to their's for the day.
Don't care. Peaceful Sunday for a change.

My Mum
At 63 Mum's had a long and stressful life which is beginning to take its toll.
She's had and has Angina, a stroke, cancer, diabetes and high blood
pressure. Like her mother before her, she is slowly losing touch with
reality and her world as she knows it is becoming very small.
She has cared for my invalid father since 1973 since we had a cra accident.
She's driving me nuts.
